Clarence "Big House" Gaines was the head basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University from 1946 to 1993, and a charter member of the Reynolda Rotary Club. Coach Gaines was a giant in the community, and always championed the importance of education.
In his honor, Reynolda Rotary established the Clarence "Big House" Gaines Reynolda Rotary College Assistance Program, which aims to provide scholarships to worthy Forsyth County students who choose to attend Winston-Salem State or Forsyth Technical Community College.
The scholarship fund is maintained through a partnership with the Shallow Ford Foundation, and provides up to $5,000 per year to a student at Winston-Salem State University, or up to $2,500 per year to a student at Forsyth Tech.
Each year, Reynolda Rotary hosts a golf tournament to fund the continued efforts of this scholarship fund. The 2025 Golf Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24th at Bermuda Run Country Club's West Course.
