Clarence "Big House" Gaines was the head basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University from 1946 to 1993, and a charter member of the Reynolda Rotary Club.  Coach Gaines was a giant in the community, and always championed the importance of education.

In his honor, Reynolda Rotary established the Reynolda Rotary's Gaines Scholarship, which aims to provide scholarships to worthy Forsyth County students who choose to attend Winston-Salem State or Forsyth Technical Community College.

The endowed scholarship fund is maintained through a partnership with the Shallow Ford Foundation, and provides up to $5,000 per year to a student at Winston-Salem State University, or up to $2,500 per year to a student at Forsyth Tech.
